Is Russian really that hard?
Russian is often described as one of the hardest languages to learn, but in my experience, a lot of that reputation comes from poor teaching. Students are often overwhelmed with too much grammar too soon, or taught in a way that makes the language feel chaotic. Russian is not simple, but it is far more learnable than people think when it is taught in the right order.
How long does it take to learn Russian?
That depends on what you mean by “learn.” If your goal is to read complex literature in the original, that is a long-term path. If your goal is to speak, understand, travel, hold conversations, and build real fluency, that has a much clearer timeline. Most students can reach a solid beginner level within a few months. Strong conversational fluency takes longer and depends on consistency, lesson frequency, and the amount of input you get outside class.
Can I start from zero?
Absolutely. Many of my students start as complete beginners. I guide you step by step, so you are not left guessing what to study first, what to ignore for now, or how to organize your learning. That structure matters much more than people realize.
Can you help me if I need Russian for travel, family, work, or exams?
Yes. I work with students who need Russian for very different reasons: hobby, travel, relationships, heritage connection, professional goals, university study, and exam preparation (I work with Russian OPI as well as TORFL and NEWL). The method stays structured, but the focus is always tailored to the person in front of me.
I want to learn Russian as a hobby or read Dostoevsky in the original!
Many students come because they simply love the language, the culture, or the literature. Wanting to read Fyodor Dostoevsky in the original is one of the most heartwarming reasons I hear. In fact, this is one of the most popular reasons students come to me. Over the years, I was genuinely and positively surprised by how many people simply want to learn Russian out of love for the language, culture, or the dream of reading Dostoevsky in the original. I hear it so often that I made sure to include it in this FAQ. It is a beautiful goal, and I love helping students build toward it step by step.
Where are you located?
I am based in the United States and teach ONLINE around the world. For many learners, my timezone makes scheduling simpler and communication smoother, especially across North American and European time zones.
What happens in a trial lesson?
The trial lesson is where I assess your level, your goals, and the fastest realistic path forward. If you are a beginner, we begin right away. If you already know some Russian, I identify where things are stuck and what needs to be fixed.
